Makers Corner: Flower Wax is a Pain in the Bud!

Flower Wax can be a pain in the bud!

I am creating zero-waste ensconcing wraps for my new skin conditioning moisture bar collection. Here you see me painting organic unbleached pure cotton muslin with the flower wax. Each side is hand-poured three times and painted in broad strokes, then heated again, cooled, and repeated until each cell of the cloth is fully penetrated.

Candillia wax is very finicky and truly temperamental. When formulating products with pure natural plant-based raw materials, the precise ratio of candelilla wax to oil is precarious, to say the least. Each botanical oil blends slightly differently and the perfect melding point is elusive.

The true temperamental nature of candelilla wax is also one of the reasons I love it! Depending on the melding, holding, and pouring temperatures I can create a firm, buttery soft, silky sheen, or matte experience.
